Which zodiac this chart uses
This calculator uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa — the one adopted by the Indian government calendar reform committee. It sits about 24° away from the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology, so the same birthday frequently produces a different Sun sign. Neither is wrong; they measure different things.
Why the Moon nakshatra matters most
The Moon moves fast, circling the zodiac in a little over 27 days. So this system cuts the zodiac into 27 segments of 13°20' each. Which one holds the Moon is the single most important position here: it sets the emotional ground note, and it decides where the dasha sequence begins.
Why the rising sign needs an exact time
The rising sign changes roughly every two hours — in practice anywhere from one to three, depending on latitude and season. With a birth time you get the full South Indian square chart and all twelve houses; without one, the reading is limited to what the Moon alone can carry.

Common questions
Do I need to know my exact birth time?
For a full natal chart, yes. The rising sign changes about every two hours, and if the time is off the whole house structure shifts with it. But if you only want the Moon nakshatra, no — the synastry and relationship-pattern tools on this site read the Moon only, and work without a birth time.
Why is my Moon sign different from what I usually see?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac; Western astrology uses the tropical one. The two are about 24° apart, so landing a sign away is common. Neither calculation is wrong — they are measuring different things.
