The rising sign is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The Earth turns 15° an hour and a sign spans 30°, so the ascendant changes roughly every two hours — in practice one to three, depending on latitude and season.

Moon sign and Moon nakshatra are the same position

The Moon sign — the nakshatra, in this system — is the most important placement here. The 27 nakshatras divide the zodiac evenly at 13°20' each, and where the Moon fell decides the emotional ground note as well as where the dasha sequence begins.

Why the rising sign here differs from elsewhere

This page uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa — the one adopted by the Indian government calendar reform committee. It sits about 24° from the tropical zodiac, so both the ascendant and the Sun sign frequently land a sign away from what you are used to.

Why is the rising sign here different from what I usually see?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, Western astrology the tropical one, about 24° apart. Landing a sign away is common. Both are internally consistent — they are measuring different things.

What if I do not know my exact birth time?

The ascendant cannot be fixed, but the nakshatra usually can. Run it at a few different times: if the nakshatra stays the same, the Moon was far from a boundary that day and you can trust it.
